Watch my TEDx talk: why we prepare more to fly a plane than to raise a human being.

You love your kids more than anything. You strive every day to be the best parents you can be. And still, you feel you are falling short on everything.

At work you miss your kids. With your kids you worry about work. And at home it feels like your children hold all the power.

Does this sound like your home?

→ It's 7:45, everyone is dressed, and a meltdown over the "wrong" socks makes you all late. Again.

→ Every evening the screen goes off and the shouting goes on.

→ The minute you open your laptop or pick up the phone, the siblings start fighting.

→ Your child says "no" to everything, and you give in just to keep the peace, then feel resentful.

→ There is hitting, throwing or biting, and a quiet fear that your child is "difficult".

→ Bedtime takes two hours, and when the kids finally sleep there is nothing left of you, or of the two of you.

→ You snap, then feel guilty. You promise yourself tomorrow will be different, and then it isn't.

It is not because you don't love them enough. It is not because your kids are "difficult".

There are 4 reasons. And they are not the ones you think.

In my 12 years as a mother and my work as a parenting coach, I have seen the same 4 reasons sitting underneath almost every family that feels out of control. Different kids, different homes, different struggles, and the same 4 reasons, every time.

Once you can see them, you can't unsee them. And everything starts to change.

1) You’re correcting the behaviour instead of understanding it
…and the reason is that most of the parenting advice out there teaches you to manage what your child does: the time-out, the reward, the consequence, the perfect script. But behaviour is the symptom, not the cause. Your child’s behaviour is information. Until we ask “What is causing this?” instead of “How do I stop this?”, the same struggles keep coming back, dressed up differently each time.

2) You were taught to push emotions down, not to understand them
…and the reason is that most of us grew up hearing “stop crying”, “don’t be so dramatic”, “go to your room until you calm down”. We learned that anger, sadness and embarrassment were problems to get rid of. So now, when your child has a big emotion, it sets off yours, and you either shut it down or lose it. Suppressed emotions don’t disappear. They come out sideways: in meltdowns, in shouting, in overeating, overworking and endless scrolling.

3) Nobody taught you what you need (or what your child needs)
…and the reason is that most of us didn’t get our needs met as children, and nobody ever taught us what those needs were. Not ours, not our children’s. So we don’t recognise them. And unmet needs don’t go away quietly. In children, they show up as difficult behaviour. In adults, they show up as exhaustion, resentment and unhealthy ways of coping.

4) You’re still playing the role you had in your family of origin
…and the reason is that many of us were parentified. We looked after a parent, kept the peace, held everything together. We were the responsible one long before we should have been. Which means we never got to fully be the child, and we learned to give our power away. Now we give it to our children. That’s when the kids start running the show and things spiral out of control. Not because we don’t care, but because we’re not in the leader’s seat. So we either become small and afraid of our own children, or we swing the other way into control and authority. Neither works.

With the roadmap, you go...

→ From the morning meltdown that makes everyone late...
To a morning rhythm your kids know by heart, and a calm parent who understands what the tears are really about.

→ From the nightly screen-time battle...
To clear, kind limits set before the screen goes on, and a child who is allowed to protest, cry, and then move on.

→ From siblings fighting for your attention the moment you are busy...
To short moments of one-on-one connection that fill their cup, so they need to fight for you less.

→ From "no" to everything and giving in to keep the peace...
To boundaries held with warmth: you stay steady, they feel safe.

→ From hitting, throwing and the fear that something is wrong with your child...
To reading behaviour as a language, understanding the need underneath, and knowing what to say in the moment.

→ From two-hour bedtimes and no energy left for each other...
To a bedtime routine that ends with an evening for yourselves.

→ From FOMO at work and FOMO at home...
To simple structures and a fair division of the load, so you can be fully present wherever you are.

"But we have kids at home on a Sunday morning..."

I know. That is real family life, and you are welcome to bring it.

Let the kids watch a film for a bit, or take turns: one of you joins the first hour while the other is with the kids, then you swap. And if you can't make the full two hours, you get the recording and the transcript, so nothing is lost.

One ticket is for your family, so both parents can join.

Who am I?

I'm Maria Bordallo, Mama Maria. I'm a certified Aware Parenting coach, a TEDx speaker and a mother. I have coached employees at companies like Booking.com and Adyen, I worked at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and I fly airplanes. Then I became a parent and found myself completely unprepared for a child's emotional world.

Today I help parents feel grounded and confident, and lead their families together. Because we prepare more to fly a plane than to raise a human being, and love alone is not enough.
